In Episode 4 of the Pest Perspectives Podcast, I’m joined by Debbie Wilson from Wilson Pest Management and Training.

Debbie has worked in the pest control industry for more than 20 years and has experienced it from just about every angle - starting out as a technician, progressing into high-dependency sites and field biology, working on the distributor side of the industry and eventually setting up her own training and consultancy business.

We talk about why practical, hands-on experience is so important in pest control and why learning the job properly goes far beyond simply passing an exam.

Debbie explains what a Field Biologist actually does, how inspections support audited sites, and why Field Biologists should be seen as an extra pair of eyes rather than someone coming in to catch technicians out.

We also discuss the route to becoming a Certified Field Biologist, including qualifications, food safety knowledge, advanced pest management training and continuing professional development.

There’s plenty of discussion around RSPH pest management qualifications, CPD, training new technicians, working on audited sites and why keeping your knowledge up to date is so important in an industry that is constantly changing.

We also get into something I think the pest control industry needs to talk about more — attracting new people into the profession.

Pest control can offer a genuine long-term career, with opportunities to progress from technician level into technical roles, training, field biology, management and much more. But if young people are never shown those opportunities, how are they supposed to know the industry even exists?

A really interesting conversation with someone who has built up a huge amount of experience across the pest management industry.
