Rats, Drains and Smarter Pest Control with John | Pest Perspectives Podcast
In Episode 5 of the Pest Perspectives Podcast, I’m joined by John for a really interesting chat about pest control, drainage, rats, training, business and technology.
John has had a really varied career and eventually found his way into pest control after working in engineering, government and private industry.
A big part of this episode is about rats and drainage, which is an area John has a huge amount of experience in.
We talk about CCTV drain surveys, understanding how drainage systems work, finding damaged pipes and why just putting a camera down a drain isn’t enough if you don’t really know what you’re looking for.
John also explains why pest controllers could be missing opportunities by simply passing drainage work on, and why working closely with drainage companies can be a good option.
We also chat about rat investigations, proofing, trail cameras, Goodnature traps, digital monitoring and why finding the actual cause of a rat problem is so important.
There’s also plenty of business talk, including pricing, knowing your true costs and understanding the value of the service you’re providing rather than just trying to be the cheapest.
We also get into training, RSPH qualifications, CPD and some of John’s thoughts on how pest control has changed over the years.
A really enjoyable conversation with someone who has a lot of experience and some very strong views on how pest control should be done properly.
Let me know in the comments - do you think pest controllers should be doing more drain investigation work?
